Fore the Ladies Finds: August 2026
Hi all -I was listening to a podcast with Wright Thompson about the process of writing. He specifically used an example about Michael Jordan and how the basketball legends lives a life where his entire identity is built on something that he once was.
So naturally I made this commentary about myself. My entire identity is golf. It’s what I do for work. It’s what I do with my spare time. But how beautiful is it that my entire identity isn't reliant on something that I once was? I was never a professional golfer or a collegiate athlete. I have always played golf for the love of it and the desire of self improvement.
I then spiraled into thinking about my friends at all different stages of their lives. Some are having children. Some are making a career change, and others are settling in to the next chapter of their lives. And some are building an entirely new identity based on this hobby that gives us new friends, frustrates us, and fills our calendars.
We’re playing the sport that typically defines retirement, decades before we enter that stage. With golf, our best days on the course have the potential to be ahead of us. Sure, that could be related to how we play, but those days may be incredible because of a business venture discussed, a new connection made, or experiencing golf through a child's eyes. How wonderful is it that golf can be a vehicle to move us forward and not dwell on who we once were?
